A marriage of fine food and fine wine

Food and wine have been married for thousands of years, a union that has found true happiness in the Margaret River region.

stve blakeney photoThe pursuit of premium wines in Margaret River tempted the courtship with fine food and together they now walk hand in hand in a symbiotic relationship.

Wineries led the way in the fine food movement in the region about 20 years ago, building restaurants on their often picturesque vineyards.

Some of those early vineyard restaurants are now famous, a testament to the skill and creativity of their chefs at matching the superb wines with the wonderfully fresh and exciting foods of the south west. Others are in the process of building their reputations.

The wineries don’t have it all their own way. Throughout the region a variety of restaurants have opened in the past decade providing a range of dining experiences from cafes through to world class a la carte restaurants.

Associated with the growth in fine wine and dining has come the production of fresh food that ranges from exotic meats like ostrich and venison through to fruits, berries and vegetables.

The local olive oil industry had also shadowed the viticulture industry. The fruity and sometimes peppery local oils are etching out a reputation and experimentation throughout the industry has produced tantalising examples of value added oils.

The Margaret River region, with its abundant rainfall and Mediterranean climate that gives slow and even ripening of fruit, produces big flavours and the result is memorable wines, food and oils.

The growth in gourmet food suppliers has also joined the procession. Some of the local shops specialise in local produce while others tempt shoppers with local and imported foods.

In the Margaret River Online FOOD TRAIL we are attempting to bring together all these elements and hope you enjoy our efforts.
