Thirty years ago I purchased 77 acres
of agricultural land with 1.5km of frontage to the Margaret River.
Surfing
was my initial attraction to area and over the next 30 years I discovered
there was so much more. I purchased the property purely because I loved
the uniqueness and spectacular topography of the land.
Much of the property was unusable for farming because of the steeply
timbered slopes, but to me it was very unique and a stimulating
place to live.
Unbeknown to me when I started to design and build my own home on the
spot where the photograph at left was taken, it was to become the
base for my long term future.
In those days this region was economically depressed with
people leaving the area, not flocking to it as they do now. Some of
my friends were involved in similar projects. Inspired by
the ‘counter-culture’ and
imbued with a sense of freedom and creativity, we handcrafted gloriously
unconventional homes.
Time was not an issue and work proceeded as funds became available.
Much use was made of recycled building materials in conjunction with
local stone
and timber, mud bricks and rammed earth.
Much has changed in recent years; the region has flourished economically
and socially as few of us imagined,
yet it remains one of the most beautiful, unspoiled places anywhere.
