Thirty years ago I purchased 77 acres of agricultural land with 1.5km of frontage to the Margaret River.

Surfing was my initial attraction to area and over the next 30 years I discovered there was so much more. I purchased the property purely because I loved the uniqueness and spectacular topography of the land.

Much of the property was unusable for farming because of the steeply timbered slopes, but to me it was very unique and a stimulating place to live. Unbeknown to me when I started to design and build my own home on the spot where the photograph at left was taken, it was to become the base for my long term future.

In those days this region was economically depressed with people leaving the area, not flocking to it as they do now. Some of my friends were involved in similar projects. Inspired by the ‘counter-culture’ and imbued with a sense of freedom and creativity, we handcrafted gloriously unconventional homes.

Time was not an issue and work proceeded as funds became available. Much use was made of recycled building materials in conjunction with local stone and timber, mud bricks and rammed earth.

Much has changed in recent years; the region has flourished economically and socially as few of us imagined, yet it remains one of the most beautiful, unspoiled places anywhere. [MORE]
