Nyindamurra Family School

Nyindamurra Family School was founded in 1982, by ten local families united in a desire to be involved in their children’s education and to experience a strong sense of community. It is a small and nurturing independent school for students from kindergarten to year seven. In 2005 there are 96 students enrolled and Wendy Roediger has been the Head Teacher since the school’s second year.

It is mandatory that all WA government, independent, and Catholic schools achieve universal learning outcomes for students, incorporating literacy and numeracy benchmarks. Therefore all schools on the Cape incorporate the Curriculum Council’s Curriculum Framework, yet utilise different philosophies, teaching methods and programs to achieve best practice outcomes.

Nyindamurra Family School’s philosophy is “to help each child fulfil his or her potential in an atmosphere of respect, cooperation, self-discipline and creativity.” Innovative teaching methods are encouraged and a Virtues and Values Program is promoted throughout the school. The school actively supports children’s and parents’ rights and responsibilities and uses communication practices that foster mutual respect between adults and children.

It offers highly personalised tuition, aiming for a maximum of ten students per academic year, and provides a special program of one-to-one tutorials in literacy and numeracy education. The school’s vision is to provide “a nurturing environment that caters for the whole child in the development of lifetime learning skills, academic, and creative excellence.”

The school currently offers LOTE (Languages other than English) studies in French and hosts a French Connection Open Day in term three.

All parents play a vital and valued role in the school’s governance and operations. The STEP parenting program (Systematic Training in Effective Parenting) underpins the school’s behaviour management procedures. This program uses logical consequences and restorative justice principles. Training workshops are offered to all teachers and parents, with the aim of encouraging continuity between family and school.

Nyindamurra Family School promotes social responsibility by sponsoring an Indonesian child through Oxfam and each term students also raise funds for a chosen charity. The school has taken part in Oxfam’s Walk against Walk, World Vision’s 40 Hour Famine and Jump Rope for Heart.

The school’s tuition fee schedule in 2005 is $168 per term for kindergarten and $389 per term for primary grades one to seven, with a sliding reduced fee rate for siblings.
